Understand what your medical cover on your Travel
Insurance policy will do
If you get sick or have an accident while
you are travelling, your policy will cover your emergency medical expenses up
to a certain limit while you are away from your home country. Medical conditions and emergencies are handled by the medical assistance provider, who
will liaise with local doctors treating the patient to ensure that the patient
is receiving adequate care and will report back to the insurer on the patient’s
medical condition.. Europ Assistance SA performs this service on all policies
sold by Travelinsure. Once Europ Assistance SA assesses that the patient is
medically fit to fly, the patient is flown home. The actual expense of medical
evacuation and repatriation is covered by all our policies. As soon as you are
safely home the travel insurance no longer covers you for ongoing treatment.
Most people are then covered by their own medical aid or heath care insurance.
Pre-existing medical conditions
Most travel insurance policies do not cover
your medical expenses if they are a result of a medical condition that you had
before you travelled. However, Travelinsure offers cover for pre-existing
conditions in our
Business
and
Leisure Policies. Read the definition of a
pre-existing condition in your policy and determine whether you have any
medical history that fits the definition of a pre-existing condition. Consult
your GP if you are unsure. If you have a serious condition and you have a good
chance of being hospitalised when you are travelling you may need to call the
helpdesk to see if you can have your policy endorsed
to cover you. Bear in mind that some insurance companies may refuse to insure
you if the medical risk from your pre-existing medical condition is too high.
Terrorism
Whereas many travel insurance policies
exclude medical cover due to terrorism, Travelinsure covers unexpected
terrorism in all our policies except for
Cruise
and
Senior Cover. Assess whether you are
travelling in a country where terrorist activity is present, and if you are
unsure you can contact the helpdesk. Our
Business
Policy offers the highest cover for medical expenses due to unexpected
terrorism. Ensure that your country of destination does not have a travel
warning (see
www.fco.gov.uk).
Hazardous activities or sports
If you are going to be playing sports such
as rugby or partaking in any hazardous activity such as paragliding, white
water rafting etc, you may not be covered if you are injured as a result of
this activity. Make sure you check your policy or call the helpdesk to clarify
if you are covered. Our policies cover the following activities
(except
where these activities are professional or involve professional team
participation):
Archery (properly supervised), badminton,
ballooning (organized excursion), basket ball, bowls, canoeing (in calm
waters), cycling, diving (recreational, and accompanied by a qualified diver),
fishing, golf, horse riding (excludes competitions and jumping, protective head
gear to be worn), roller skating, rowing, snorkeling, squash, surfing, tennis,
volley ball.
You can purchase
snow
sport cover if you are going skiing.
Customise your Cover
Read the schedule of benefits that summarises the cover
for the specific Product or Policy you are buying. You
can customise your cover by adding on optional such as:
Baggage cover
–
additional cover for loss and theft of personal items in
your baggage.
Golf cover – if
you are paying golf this will cover you against loss or
theft of your golf equipment.
